Illegal and violent evictions

As Illegal and violent were considered the eviction actions called "humanitarian operation" carried out at Cerro Galera, Arraijan, during which one person was killed.

In this regard, chairman of the party in formation broad front for democracy (FAD), Fernando Cebamanos, warned that it was an inhuman act, and in reality it was nothing else than a crime committed.

In his view, there is no plan for housing development, so these people are looking for solutions of home occupying abandoned territories.

"There is no policy of housing for these sectors," said the political leader.

Amidst rumors, the administrative unit of reverted goods (UABR), of Ministry of economy and finance, said that the more than 22 hectares where informal settlements in Cerro Galera were established are not for sale.

Evictions to be continued

For his part, President Juan Carlos Varela, during the installation of the Permanent Commission for the Construction Sector, mentioned that the Panamanian State has the economic capacity and structure so that all citizens can live in a dignified dwelling under a safe roof, potable water and wastewater treatment.

He also added that with this the government is looking forward to encouraging the construction of social interest housing to reduce the invasion of private land.

On the situation in Cerro Galera, he explained that the humanitarian operation has only one purpose and this is to allow Panamanian families live in places without risks.

"This operation is to be held and it will culminate when the 175 families living in the dangerous hillside are relocated to a decent place", he said.
